Consultation has concluded. The Board of Education approved the revised boundary review at the February 13, 2024 Board meeting.
Your opinion matters, and we want to hear from you!
The Abbotsford School District is in the process of conducting a boundary review for the Highstreet Village Development. We recognize that changes could impact your educational experience and are committed to ensuring your voice is heard. Whether you are a parent, student, or an engaged community member, your perspective is essential in shaping the future of our schools.
What's Happening?
Highstreet Village is a new housing development area which includes 700 townhomes and apartments, located in the western part of the city along Mt. Lehman Road at Cardinal Avenue, next to Highstreet Village Shopping Centre. We're expecting around 35 school-age children to live here when it's fully developed.
The Need for Changes
The purpose of the proposed boundary change is to encompass the entire development property into the Dave Kandal Elementary catchment.
What You Should Know
If you are an existing Abbotsford School District family living beyond the development property, this won't affect your child's school placement; the changes only apply to the new development area.
The new Highstreet Village Development is close to the school in question (Dave Kandal Elementary) - less than 1.5km away.
Dave Kandal Elementary is projected to remain under capacity into the longer term. The populations of 5-10 year olds living in this school catchment area has been declining for several years, with very little residential growth expected.
Proposed Boundary Changes
Elementary Catchment Boundary: Dave Kandal Elementary / Blue Jay Elementary
CURRENT: The current elementary school boundary runs along the northern edge of the development property on Cardinal Avenue, with the new development currently being part of the Blue Jay Elementary catchment.
PROPOSED CHANGE: The proposed change would move the boundary to the south side of the property development, moving the entire development into the Dave Kandal Elementary catchment. This would divert expected enrolment increases from Blue Jay Elementary, which is over capacity and experiencing pockets of development.
